Ahrens fly high with latest project for Qantas pilot academy

Ahrens has celebrated their role in helping the next generation of Qantas pilots learn to fly at the official opening of the Qantas Group Pilot Academy today in Toowoomba, Queensland.

Ahrens’ Design & Construct QLD team successfully completed an impressive training hangar as part of works for the new facilities, which opened its doors to the first 34 students earlier this month.

The $1.5 million project for client, Wagner Corporation, involved the design and construction of a new 1,500m2 hangar building, as well as 250m2 of associated office space and amenities.

The large hangar comprises of an assembly room, secure parts store, office, lunchroom and amenities and is capable of housing eight light aircraft at any given time.

With a fabrication facility located close to the Wellcamp site, Ahrens were able to manufacture all of the building components locally, using the best of materials and having them quickly delivered to site.

Adhering to a tight timeframes, Ahrens delivered the facility in a little under five months and provided a cost-effective and functional building solution for the client, utilising the latest in steel technology.

Wagner Corporation Chairman John Wagner said they were delighted to see the pilot academy delivered within five months from turning the sod to completion of construction and the finishing fit-out.

“The Qantas Group Pilot Academy is a world-class asset for our region and further establishes Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport and Wellcamp Business Park as the location of choice for aviation training, maintenance and logistics service and industries,” Mr Wagner said.

The academy will have the capacity to train up to 250 pilots every year, helping the industry meet the increased need for skilled aviators.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the opening of the academy was a major milestone for the company and the aviation industry.

“Opening our new Pilot Academy is a historic moment for Qantas, for aviation in Australia and for the thousands of future pilots who will learn how to fly here in Toowoomba,” Mr Joyce said.

“Qantas Group pilots have a long-held reputation for being amongst the best in the world because of their high standards of training, and that tradition continues with the launch of our own Pilot Academy.”

Ahrens were proud to have been involved in such a ground-breaking project and look forward to witnessing the facility’s continued success.
