Repurposing 2021

Breathing new life into enduring resources

Signature Barossan build sees Ahrens create building blocks out of repurposed materials

With a diverse range of in-house capabilities, Ahrens can provide a number of environmentally sustainable solutions to their projects in the way of water storage solutions, material selections, locally fabricated steel and components, and smart design techniques that are employed to maximise on natural resources such as sun, water catchment and air flow.

Ahrens’ recent work on the new home of Artisans of Barossa in Tanunda is a prime example of this ethos being put into place. Construction works included a striking new cellar door, restaurant, provedore, terrace dining area, commercial kitchen, private dining and meeting rooms, and a farm implement shed.

The build incorporated reclaimed and repurposed heritage galvanised cladding, timber truss and Jarrah reclaimed from 100 year old wine storage vats, which were transformed into new timber flooring within the wine tasting lounge and VIP tasting room.

Ahrens carefully dismantled an existing century-old shed, repurposing the cladding as a feature in the dining room, and repurposing the timber trusses into the newly constructed restaurant.

The reclaimed timber flooring was given new life, having been sourced by the Artisans from a local family who had salvaged it from a winery, where it had formed part of fortified wine storage vats; the timber is believed to be over 300 years old.

Artisans of Barossa will provide a home for eight wine makers to display and sell their wines; these labels are Lienert Vineyards, John Duval Wines, Spinifex Wines, Hobbs of Barossa Ranges, Sons of Eden, Purple Hands Wines, Schwarz Wine Co., and Chaffey Bros Wine Co. The facility reinforces the Barossa as a premier wine region of the world, and allows visitors the experience of being able to taste and purchase great local produce.

Ahrens brought Artisans of Barossa’s idea to life by partnering with them throughout the whole process, from concept right through to completion.
