Ahrens has secured its largest project to-date to design and construct an expansive 70,000 square metre distribution centre for Australia’s leading wholesaler and distributor, Metcash.
The $66.4 million new facility will be located in Gepps Cross, Adelaide, and will replace Metcash’s existing distribution centre at Kidman Park, which Ahrens completed 19 years ago.
The ‘best-in-class’ centre will span feature a 14,850 square metre temperature-controlled freezer facility, 2,400 square metre battery charging area, 46,000 square metre ambient warehouse as well as regional and head office facilities, amenities, plant room and services.
The distribution centre is expected to improve operational efficiencies to Metcash’s retailer network in South Australia as well as serve as the distribution centre for Metcash’s Australian Liquor Marketers operation.
The project affirms Ahrens’ long-established relationship with Metcash, with this being the seventh project Ahrens has completed nationally for the company in the past 20 years.
Ahrens has partnered with Charter Hall and land owner Dimitri Aretzis to complete this project with Metcash being the end user.
Early pre-works commenced in November 2018 with the owner carrying out the demolition of old buildings on the former abattoir site.
Ahrens is anticipated to be on-site from January next year with completion projected for May 2020.
