Safety
The safety of employees, sub-contractors and visitors is our number one priority every day at Ahrens. We are particularly proud of our safety record, which is a direct result of our commitment to the ongoing education of employees in safe operation and procedures.
Safety on construction sites and in all workshops and offices is a shared responsibility and all employees understand and appreciate the importance of adhering to documented safety procedures. Regular ongoing risk assessments and safe planning of work takes place in all our workshops and construction sites to identify major hazards and take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Certification
In June 2010, Ahrens achieved certification in Health & Safety (AS 4801). This was achieved through the introduction of new systems, procedures and additional safety initiatives. This significant milestone represented a tremendous team effort by everyone at Ahrens.
Employee Induction
All new employees are immediately inducted by the QHSE Manager or the relevant site Safety Co-ordinator. The induction process highlights to employees the requirement to follow procedures, identifies major risks and hazards and familiarises them with evacuation and emergency procedures.
Communications & Training
Frequent “Toolbox” and Safety Committee meetings are held with the workforce to address safety concerns and discuss and action areas for improvements. Safety issues and performance are regularly communicated with employees through newsletters, communication BBQs and weekly updates. In addition, workshop and office noticeboards display important information and reminders. Ongoing training is provided for those employees who work in high risk areas.
QHSE Management Software
This software system efficiently manages all hazard and incident reports and maintains all of the documented health and safety systems and procedures. Ahrens worked with a software company to produce a tailored system that meets documentation requirements under Australian and New Zealand standards for Safety, Quality and Environment.
Workshop & Site Safety Initiatives
We have introduced many safety initiatives at our six primary manufacturing sites and all of our construction sites to ensure the safety of our employees, sub-contractors, visitors and the public. Site induction, safety signage and Standard Operating Procedures are fundamental to safety in these areas, particularly for high risk activities such as loading/unloading and working at heights.
Ahrens Safe Campaign
In 2011, we launched a workplace safety campaign called “Ahrens Safe”. The logo and a series of posters appear throughout all of our business to remind employees that “Every Individual is Important”. Our aim is for every employee to return home safely to their families at the end of each work day.
