MICHAEL A MASTER OF HIS CRAFT

FROM APPRENTICE TO TRADESMAN AND NOW A MENTOR, MICHAEL MCFARLANE SHARES HIS JOURNEY AT AHRENS

Michael’s journey with Ahrens began in 2020 when he joined as a welding apprentice at Sheaoak Log. After initially pursuing law, he found his true calling in welding and fabrication through a friend’s recommendation. Spending over two years at Sheaoak Log, Michael honed his skills before transferring to Kingsford, where he completed his apprenticeship and officially became a tradesman.

Now a heavy fabricator in the SA Steel division, Michael primarily works on large beams and frames. “I still do a lot of welding, but I am enjoying the fabrication side of things,” he says. His expertise and commitment to quality have earned him the responsibility of mentoring an apprentice, a challenge he has embraced. “I was only just starting my fourth year when I got an apprentice to train, and it’s been rewarding to see him pick things up quickly.”

Michael takes immense pride in his work, ensuring everything that leaves his area is of the highest standard. “I like having my own space and the responsibility that comes with it. I always make sure my work is as good as it can be – it helps make the welder’s job easier,” he says. His dedication is evident in projects like the Aurora Colour Silo, where he performed most of the seam welds, passing rigorous UT testing with flying colours. “They put me in the deep end, and I had to figure it out—it was a great learning experience.”

One of Michael’s standout qualities is his leadership mindset. Learning from seasoned tradesmen while refining his own techniques, he aims to build his leadership skills and mentor younger workers. “The younger blokes feel comfortable coming to me with questions because we’re close in age. I want to keep developing my leadership skills and help them succeed.”

Michael values the camaraderie at Ahrens, describing the workplace as friendly and secure. “The guys we work with are great, and everything is well-organised and safe. It makes a big difference.” His time at trade school also played a crucial role in his growth, where he connected with like-minded peers, exchanged knowledge and built a strong professional network.

Outside of work, Michael plays football for the Two Wells Roosters and enjoys time with his border collie/blue heeler, Brixie. He and his partner are also in the process of building a home in Angle Vale.

A highlight of Michael’s career was his victory in the 2024 WorldSkills Regional Welding Competition, where he excelled in both stick and MIG welding. “I didn’t expect to win after making a mistake, but it felt incredible when I did,” he says. Although just past the age limit to compete at the nationals, his achievement underscores his skill, dedication, and commitment to the trade.

With a promising future ahead, Michael is well positioned to make a lasting impact at Ahrens. His journey from apprentice to tradesman and mentor is a testament to his hard work and passion for the industry.
